The importance of the pause in speech is comparable to the role of the rest in music; the rests are as integral to a composition as are the played notes. Notes and rests in music correspond to phrases and pauses in speech; each member of each pair contributes equally to the overall cadence.

Think of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, two great popular singers who were acclaimed as much for their interpretive phraseology as for their vocal quality. Mr. Sinatra and Ms. Fitzgerald often held some of their pauses as long as their notes. Amanda Carr, a contemporary jazz singer, defines the pause in music as “ . . . the element of space that shapes phrasing as much as the notes.” And Dizzy Gillespie, the great jazz trumpeter, gave us his own inimitable definition of the pause: “It’s taken me most of my life to know which notes not to play.”1
